What is Drone Insurance?

What is Drone Insurance?

Commercial Drone Insurance is an emerging market in the insurance world. Drones are the newest technology craze–and people and companies are finding more and more ways to implement them in their fields of work. The construction industry is currently seeing a boom in drone usage on job sites – serving a wide array of functions, from land surveying to safety inspection. Continue reading to understand what Drone Insurance actually is.

What is Drone Insurance?

Commercial Drone Insurance is a liability policy that commercial drone operators purchase to protect themselves from the various risks that come with operating a drone. These risks include the general liability risks--a drone malfunctioning and causing property damage or bodily injury--but can also include risks to the “payload” or to the “hull,” which, depending on your policy, may or may not be covered.

What is Hull Coverage?

Hull coverage refers to insurable coverage on any damage to the actual drone itself, which may not qualify under a drone liability policy alone.

What is Payload Coverage?

Payload coverage refers to anything the drone may be carrying with it – often times an expensive camera can be attached to the drone to take detailed pictures.

In some cases, drones are used to transport goods or materials. Damage to these materials attached to your drone may not be covered, unless you have specific “payload” coverage. Additional specific coverages can be purchased, including non-owned coverage if you are leasing/renting the unit, and personal injury coverage for any privacy breaches/concerns the drone may bring along with it.
