Wynnetria Shorter’s career path into insurance was not linear.
Originally earning her undergraduate degree in community health, she envisioned a future in healthcare. But over time, her path evolved. Through early professional experiences and a pivotal life transition, she found her way into the insurance industry.
“I realized claims management allowed me to apply my public health foundation by analysing risk, understanding medical information, and advocating for injured workers in an impactful way.”
Seventeen years later, that intentional pivot has become a career defined not by chance, but by preparation.
Preparing for Opportunity
For Wynnetria, success has never been about chance. Early in her career, she encountered challenges around visibility, representation, and access to leadership opportunities. Rather than allowing those obstacles to limit her, she focused on intentional professional development.
“Rather than just waiting for an opportunity, I’ve learned to prepare for it,” she says.
That philosophy continues to shape her approach. She views her career progression from entry-level roles to technical claims handling and leadership responsibilities — as one of her greatest achievements.
For Wynnetria, “Achievement, for me, is measured in growth, adaptability, and the ability to make an impact.”
From Presence to Influence
The insurance industry’s evolving landscape is part of what keeps her engaged. It is an established field, yet one that continuously adapts, creating opportunities to innovate and grow.
“I see the role of women in the claims and insurance industry evolving from presence to influence,” she explains. “More women are not only stepping into the field but also stepping into many senior leadership and executive decision-making roles.”
Still, she believes progress must continue, especially when it comes to visibility and structured development opportunities.
Strength in Composure
Success in claims demands balance between analysis and decisiveness, between logic and empathy.
“Success in the claims industry requires a blend of technical expertise and interpersonal skills,” she says. “Knowledge of policies, coverage, and regulations is critical, as is the ability to assess complex situations and make sound decisions.”
When faced with difficult decisions, Wynnetria relies on reflection and composure. She pauses, assesses the facts, and considers the broader impact. As a woman of faith, she draws strength from prayer and personal reflection — practices that help her remain grounded and intentional.
It is no coincidence that when asked to describe herself in one word, she chooses “Resilient.”
Her resilience is not loud or performative. It is steady and highlights her ability to adapt, rise, and continue growing in every situation.
Balancing Purpose and Passion
Balancing personal and professional responsibilities, she says, is an ongoing journey.
She prioritizes time with her family, while remaining passionate about her work. Being intentional, setting boundaries, and valuing both spaces help her maintain perspective and fulfillment.
Staying motivated, she explains, comes from resilience and the support systems around her.
“Challenges are inevitable, but the ability to get back up, learn from experiences, and keep moving forward has been a core part of who I am,” she says. “I’m also fortunate to have a strong support system—people who encourage me, offer perspective, and remind me to keep reaching for the next level.”
For Wynnetria, resilience is strengthened by community. Her colleagues, mentors, and peers provide encouragement and clarity when challenges arise.
Lifting Others as She Climbs
Wynnetria’s advice to young women entering the industry reflects the same intentionality that has shaped her own journey.
“My advice to young women entering the industry is to be deliberate in building both your competence and confidence,” she says. “Most importantly trust yourself. You are valuable and there is room for you here.”
She credits much of her growth to learning from the women around her. Though she cannot point to a single mentor, the collective example of women advancing into leadership roles has shaped her confidence and perspective.
A Culture That Supports Growth
At TSIB, Wynnetria has found an environment that aligns with her values.
“What I value most about working at TSIB is the culture and the people,” she says. “It’s a culture rooted in teamwork, support, and recognition.”
For her, TSIB’s culture reinforces the belief that professional growth and personal integrity can coexist. That alignment has given her the confidence to continue expanding her impact.
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue growing in claims while expanding her influence across the broader industry.
“I aspire to lead teams that deliver results while creating opportunities for others — particularly women and underrepresented individuals — to see that they can contribute, grow, and make a difference.”
From healthcare ambitions to a career in claims, Wynnetria’s journey reflects the confidence to change direction and the intention to grow with it. Her story is a testament to the idea that where you start does not limit where you can lead.
