This past summer, some of our TSIB Employees spent time volunteering at the Connecticut Foodshare. The Connecticut Foodshare was founded in 1982 with the mission to have a thriving community, free of hunger. They recognize that food insecurity is a result of systemic inequities and disparities, and that food alone cannot result in sustainable, long-term solutions. The Connecticut Foodshare supports over 24,000 households monthly at mobile food pantries. They also have multiple satellite hubs across CT, with locations in Fairfield, Hartford, New Haven, New London, and Tolland counties.
TSIB employees volunteered at their Bridgeport, CT hub, which functions include:
There are over 480 partner food programs that work with the Connecticut Foodshare. One of the programs is the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). This program is for adults 60+ years old and supplements their diets with nutritious USDA foods once per month.
We were broken into 2 groups, where we sorted, inspected, and packaged a total of 868 boxes for the CSFP. In these boxes, households will find items such as cereal, protein, dairy, fruits, and vegetables, with a total weight of approximately 31 lbs. per box. We ensured all the products were packaged with care and they met the standards set forth by the Department of Social Services and the USDA.
