TSIB Volunteers: Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill (CHHOP)

This year TSIB employees spent time volunteering with the Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill (CHHOP), located in New York. Approximately 1 in 4 adults (25%) in New York State experience food insecurity.

The mission of CHHOP extends beyond providing food; it encompassed offering holistic support to individuals experiencing homelessness, veterans in need, survivors of domestic violence, and others facing diversity. These support services include:

  • Turning Points- Addresses the complex needs of individuals who have been chronically homeless.
  • Jan Peek House Shelter- A Westchester County Department of Social Services
  • Healthcare for Homeless Veterans- Assists the growing amount of homelessness amount our nations’ veterans.
  • Tierra Solida/Solid Ground- a program geared toward reducing homelessness in Peekskill by providing housing stabilization support.
  • Rehousing in Supportive Environments (RISE)- a collaborative program focused on helping survivors of domestic violence, and their families move forward.

As well as Fred’s Pantry, which operates a farm-to-pantry model and brings fresh produce twice a week as often as possible. Fred’s Pantry provides nutritious food to more than 350 households a week. We spent our time volunteering at Fred’s Pantry, right next to the St. Peter's Church in Peekskill, NY. Fred’s Pantry is a beacon of hope for those facing food insecurity in the local community.

When you step inside Fred’s Pantry you are greeted by the bustling energy of its leaders and overall mission. At Fred’s Pantry you roll up your sleeves and start assisting with unloading food pallets from the delivery trucks. From processing deliveries, sorting produce, and stocking shelves, it’s easy to see the resilience and compassion permeating from every corner of Fred's Pantry. The spirit of service ensures that over 1,300 individuals receive essential nourishment each week.

The of CHHOP's mission resonated deeply with us – the belief that every person deserves safe housing, nutritious food, and unwavering support. It was a privilege to spend time helping at Fred’s Pantry.

Our team had a renewed sense of purpose and a profound appreciation for the power of community. The impact we can create when we come together with compassion, empathy, and a willingness to serve is incredible. Volunteering at Fred’ Pantry wasn't just about the tasks we completed or the hours we volunteered – it was about the lives we touched, the smiles we shared, and the bonds we formed.
